Yeah, I caught them in Wellington. Did you go to the Auckland show, Steve?

Here's my review

While waiting for the first band to start playing I was talking to a long-time Flipper fan who expressed surprise that the audience being made up of many in their twenties and possibly younger rather than the over thirties. I'm not sure what I make of that myself. It's been quite some time since the days when Kurt Cobain donned a Flipper T-shirt. Perhaps Flipper are a prime example of a band gaining a live audience miles from their home country due to the mp3 buying/downloading crowd.

First up were Dunedin trio Mountaineater who made me ponder what early Gordons shows were like. Mountaineater had a HUGE wall of noise bringing the previously mentioned band and Spacemen 3 to mind. The sparsely used vocals were not unlike The Cure's Robert Smith in his prime. They played about six songs.

Flipper came out and Bruce Loose started talking about his band not being serious rock unlike the previous group and finding himself trapped in a cage again. Ted Falconi stood pretty much in the same place all night while strumming his guitar. The bass player and frontman moved around a lot but it's like contrasting ADD kid on speed and caffiene with a turtle. Bruce had to check his bass player's glossary (set list) a few times. Into the band's second song he states, "Fuck all those heavy stoner bands (a reference to support band Mountaineater's sound perhaps?). Acid punk is where it's at. We're the original acid punk band". Songs like personal favourite "Life" are played as are newer less engaging tracks. It's difficult to tell if Bruce is genuinely annoyed at the kid knocking the monitor or whether it's part of the band's confrontational approach. I find myself thinking about live footage of The Birthday Party I saw a good many years back as there's a similar dramatic aspect. Bruce claims to have lost his voice and asks for a couple of audience members to sing "Sex Bomb Baby" as he straps on a bass. Two young guys are happy to oblige. No encore is played.

I wrote this first: grins, thinks Phlegm has taken too many drugs over the years that he 'forget's' to pay any praise only negativity towards one self and then referances them, takes peception from messageboards and has not spoken 2 words to me, ie: douche

They bemused me, they abused me, they amused me, firstly at the price of the shirt and sweaty prices, this isn't AMERICA!! ahaha, I waz worried I'd be more misanthropic than the band as i listen to them to keep me sane in a fucking stupid world and someone else mentioned not to do house work while listening to them as you won't get much done, each to there own i guess or that the hipster audience would scare me with a renditon of haha hoho hee hee but na they were great!

all it seemed to do though was entrench a siege mentality of blue light disco dancers on one side, bunny jumpers in the middle and drunk slammers more like fall into each other on the other, as it was someone's birthday, how nice

even roger shepard was there ooh

the guest vocalist had heaps of energy but ya couldn't pull it off without those songs eh but it was the most i danced all night and for 27 bux i wanna dance whatever

I don't know how many of the orignal band there was but they looked old and was told they were the originals except for the bass player, who was hot by the way.

sorry i'm a bit tired wampwa but they are one of the better ones! and they will stick with me forever.

Mountaineater, loud! spacemen 3 vibe could take em or leave them, I liked them

Thanks for the reviews guys - and no - I didn't make the shows. Being here in Taumarunui makes the trip a hassle - especially when I really am not a driver.
That was one of the good things about being in Ipswich back in the UK - I could get a train to London at 6pm, catch a show, and make the last train back home again.
If you wanna do regular reviews on the mains Scanner site in the 'Blog' section Phlegm, get in touch.

You can submit reviews Blair - photos with them would be great too. BUT, there is no certainty I'll upload them. Punk/HC/Garage stuff in terms of genre take priority. With the review, please use formatted sentences too.

Just posted your review Phlegm - along with a pic from the Auckland show!! It's on the new Blog - accessed via the main Scanner site.

Cheers and beers.....

like i said , his was a BIG rip of mine essench, mine was on stoner doom a long time before his and he deserves no respect if he bases his whole perception of me on messageboards and has tried to discount my reputation no matter what positive things i may or may not do or have done, not knowing me at all and refusing to engage(think they call it slander) whle gleaning quite badly and atackked me over such silly things such as speling like i saying i was part of the hitler youth

I just think it's really rich

Blair, I keep looking back and comparing your review to mine and the Spaceman 3 comparison is the only similarity I see.

Anyway we went to the same show.

I did read your review but I also read Andrew Schmidt's on Mysterex before writing mine.
