One good thing at least came out of being here in the UK sorting out the passing of my Dad - I had the opportunity to watch the entire opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics!! Pretty spectacular but, in a country sooooo polluted and with sooooo many poor - maybe the cash used on all those fireworks could have been used in a more positive ecological and socio-political way? A great story on the BBC news followed incidently... They interviewed this guy of about 17-yrs-old whose house had been detroyed by the state to build something for the Olympics. It was the Chinese version of a listed building also. The state had not paid him - or his Mum - any compensation and he was, essentially, homeless. Not only that, his Mum asked to stage a peaceful protest - and was arrested on the spot and to this day remains in jail. Unreal huh? |

Yeah, the opening ceremony certainly was spectacular. Lavish fireworks are the Chinese equivalent of the haka. I really enjoyed watching the lightweight boxing. I've never really enjoyed watching the heavyweight guys who struggle to move around in the ring. |

BMX riding should be interesting today. Strange how long it has taken to become an olympic sport. Hmm, maybe motocross and rally car driving will be London events. |

I find it a fantastic effort how you managed to get around saying you 'don't wish to mix politics with sports', fair cop, well the olympic commitee will do it for you mr govt, the next games will be more ecologicaly sound they say but then again the pollution in developed nations and the way the western world runs perse the chinese are far from the worst, they are brothers in arms as you say. That being said the opening was a 'spectacular affair' and even after things change which they try to tell us through movies like historically ecshew asfolk movies such as 10,000 BC, that things have always been this way blaaaa, that beuty will not be a thing of the past only enhanced but some of the sports in the Olympics are a bit ridiculous, next they'll have a hotdog eating contest sponsored by American TV networks who could budge the communist party to change their broadcasting plans, maybe they could do an expose like in NBKillers, I wonder if they have a hardon like Kim North Career. Can't wait for the new Amebix DVD haha |
